The India Gate - an imposing structure & war memorial
India Gate, an impressive 42-meters high structure is a ceremonial memorial designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in honor of soldiers who laid their lives fighting in the world war. The unknown soldiers who laid down their lives were the Indians serving in the British Imperial Army. The inspiring structure from where stretches the huge andverdant lawns holds an eternal flame (Amar Jawan Jyoti). The purpose is basically to honorand commemorate the 70,000 Indian soldiers who had lost their lives who had fought from the side of British Army during the World War. It also bears the name of over 13,516 British and Indian soldiers killed in the Northwestern Frontier in dreadful Afghan war of the year 1919.India Gate situated close to Rastrapati Bhavan attracts many tourists every day. It is also the weekend tourist spot for Delhites who come to relax and enjoy their times.
India Gate is also addressed as “The War Memorial” an "Arc-de-Triomphe" holds similarity to the French War Memorial. It stands like an Archway exactly in the centre of road. The eternal flame was lit in the year 1971 in remembrance of unknown soldiers who gave their lives protecting India from outsiders.

The pedestal stone of India Gate of Delhi was laid by the Duke of Connaught. The structure of India Gate of Delhi was finished in the month of February and year 1921.
