Red Fort - known for outstanding planning and design
Red Fort or Lal Quila, as popularly known, was the fort and palace constructed by great and mighty Mughal Emperor – Shah Jahan. The Mughal Emperor was very adamant to shift the capital from Agra to Delhi, and for which purpose, the new headquarters of Mughal administration were constructed on the walls of the erstwhile Salimgarh Fort. Construction of Lal Quila was started in the year 1638 and took approximately 10 years’ time to put everything in its final form such that it became a magnificent sandstone entity. A wall running approximately 2 and a half kms. in length and height showing up 16 to 33 meters surrounds the complex area. The fort is separated from city by a deep fosse.
The main gate of Red Fort faces Lahore (now in Pakistan) and it distinctively connects to Chatta Chowk or the Meena Bazaar that holds the skilled jewelers, weavers and carpet makers. The artisans during the Mughal sovereigntyused to enchant the ladies of the court with their rich and exclusive merchandises.The Chhatta Chowk is connected to the Drum House also the Naubat Khana, where bands and choirs pronounced the coming of the Emperor.
The Diwan-i-Am, and the Diwan-i-Khas, were once the prominent meeting rooms for the public and private assembly. Public and the private assembly had their due in the building of the new capital. The Diwan-i-Khas has excellently fashioned walls and pillars. The very well-known Peacock Throne or the Takht-e-Khaus was housed in the Diwan-i-Am, a splendid seat for the Emperor peppered with sapphires, rubies, emeralds, pearls and the very popular and expensive Koh-i-noor diamond.
The royal baths also known as “hammams" is a stimulating sighting that the tourists will find in the Red Fort premises. There are three huge rooms showing high domes and a fountain, which also comprises sauna – all lying adjacent to the Diwan-i-Khas. The baths in Turkish style were constructed in marble, and speckled with several varieties of semi-precious gems.
The private rooms of the elite royal were constructed on higher platter than the rest of the fort with the objective to provide a splendid view of River Yamuna. The Nehr-i-Behisht is a watercourse running across the chambers flows down from the Shahi Burj tower, figurative of the stream of paradise statedin Holy Quran. The ladies quarters, or what is famous as the zenanas are circumscribed to the southern end of the royal rooms.
The Khas Mahalused to be the extravagant chamber of the great Mughal Emperor, and the Mussamman Burj tower was the place of a regular ritual, at the time when Emperor would appear before the local masses.
The Pearl Mosque in Red Fort was built by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. The mosque is a compact three domed which opens directly into the courtyard. Bahadur Shah Zafar -the last emperor of the Mughal dynasty, had constructed the Hayat Baksh Bagh garden in the northern area in the year 1842.
