Jama Masjid - The country’s largest mosque
Jama Masjid of Delhi is the biggest mosque in India and is strategically situated with its façade facing that of Red Fort. The mosque was constructed by great Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and its construction took place between the years 1644 and 1658. Jama Masjid, which was accorded the names Masjid-i-Jahan-Numa, or "mosque commanding view of the world" is considered as last architectural master pieces of Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. Jama Masjid stands at pivotal point of once popularly known Mughal capital – Shahjahanbad. The initial three storeys of the Jama Masjid tower have been constructed from red sandstone, while the fourth storey is made of marble. The fifth storey is made of sandstone. The Jama Masjid also shows convoluted carvings and has verses emblazoned from the holy Koran. The prominent prayer hall of the Jama Masjid is constructed as high cusped arches as well as the marble domes. There is also a red beard-hair of the prophet, sandals and footprints, rooted in a marble block.
