The Jal Mahal Jaipur
Jaipur the pink city of Rajasthan is famous for many palaces, markets and rituals. It is also popular for the Jal Mahal. The superb palace was made by Sawai Jai Singh II, in the year 1734 around. The exact date of construction of Jal Mahal is still unknown. The Jal Mahal has only the pavilions and a beautifully kempt terrace garden designed and constructed in a typical Rajputana style. The pleasure palace, as it is popularly known was the pleasure abode for Rajputana royal clan. It is said that royal families visited the palace with the sole purpose to seek pleasure and enjoy their life away from the royal courts and masses. Jal Mahal is strategically situated on the Man Sagar Lake. One of the sides of Jal Mahal show majestic cascade of Aravali Mountains that are dotted with several antique temples and forts. The other side lends picturesque view of pink city. When you land up at Jal Mahal, you will find that it is a simple yet sophisticated piece of Rajputana architecture which has little say. The pillars have been designed and chiseled beautifully. The palace has five storeys, with four storeys submerged in water during the times when lake is full.
The lake surrounding Jal Palace is older than the palace, and initially, it was nothing more of a physical depression that could accumulate plenty of water. As the story goes, in the famine and drought that happened in the year 1596 AD and there was severe shortage of water. The ruler of Ajmer thought of making a dam and this led to construction of lake as it is seen today. The very existence of Jal Palace has been forgotten with the flux of time. There are no diversified historical details of the Jal Palace, and therefore, you will hardly find any written records of it.
In the year 2005, Rajasthan government took the responsibility to restore the lake and Jal Palace and which ultimately made it an amazing tourist place. In the recent times, several photography enthusiasts have chosen the palace to be the theme of their creative work. Jal Place has undoubtedly gained popularity among the tourists as well as the local population. The palace and so does the surrounding lake has resplendent aura of their own. The palace has remarkable similarity to the Udaipur water palace.
